The scorched mud of the flood plains surrounding Lac de Montbel, a reservoir created in the 1980s. Trees stumps were a common feature of this desolate landscape. In some places the mud was still sticky, forming a type of clay known as marl, which had relieved several people of a shoe.

Lac de Montbel is 5 minutes from the village of Chalabre in south-west France.
