blue lagoon spa

The vaguely apocalyptic Blue Lagoon is situated in a lava field in Grindavík, Iceland. This unique spa is fed water (37-40°C) from the close-by Svartsengi geothermal plant. The milky-blue hue of the water is due to the high mineral, silica and blue-green algae content, which is claimed to have anti-ageing and therapeutic qualities. The silica mud lies around in buckets for patrons to plaster over their faces – and most do!
